TOI - Times of Incompetency
Glancing through yesterday’s front page of TOI (Times Of India), my eyes fell upon the article on LOVE. Now before I begin with that, a slight detour is in order.
TOI was my first love and they say you never forget that right. I still price the countless articles and snippets (some pasted on my wall) from it. However, ever since it became hue-conscious (guess sometime in late 2003 or 2004), I have been unable to persuade myself to like it let alone love it anymore. It seems to me that it perfectly fits the definition of a tabloid now. This one time in the bottom half of the front page of a Sunday edition, there was a whole article on thongs and how a boy was mesmerized when he saw one of his sister’s. I remember lol (laughing out loud) with my friends at the breakfast table at the time but surely enough, THAT WAS IT. Even in one of the articles that I will be quoting from shortly, at one place it says, ‘See graphic’ but guess what, there ain’t any!
Putting aside my disappointment (read anger), let’s get back to the ever so fascinating topic of LOVE.
Helen Fischer, an anthropologist (guess was wrong to think that they only study about ancient Homo sapiens and their culture) says, “By the teenage years, each of us has constructed an unconscious catalogue of aptitudes and mannerisms we are looking for in a mate. Then, when we meet someone who fits within this ‘love map’, we begin to flirt. The interaction may trigger the brain chemistry of romance and we fall head over heals in love.”
I say, “TRUE”.
Helen: You tend to fall in love when you are ready, particularly when you are lonely.
Me: That explains why I keep falling in love all the time (Ha!Ha!Ha!) but am not too sure of the former. I (a Mechanical engineer, mind you) believe that you can fall in love anytime, ready or not, but whether anything would happen surely depends on it. Oh! This perfectly explains my “special” case.
Helen: We fall for people who we interact with.
Me: Nope, I fall out of love with people who I interact with! That is why I have enjoyed being a secret admirer because deep down inside, I know that I will be disappointed. Trust me, Ignorance is BLISS.
Helen: Both men and women get enthused by individual whom they regard as mysterious.
Me: Yup.
Helen: Most fall in love with someone of same ethnic, social, religious, educational and economic background and with similar amount of physical attractiveness..
Me: Absolutely not true.
Helen: Most fall in love with someone of comparable intelligence and parallel attitudes, expectations, values and interests. We gravitate to people like ourselves.
Me: YES but want to add what Richard Bach has so beautifully showed and taught me that opposites do attract. I too used to yearn for someone just like me with the same likes, dislikes and interests. Thankfully, soon realized that we are all different in our own special ways and now believe that me and my partner would each be a half and together we would form a complete being.
To this Helen would probably say WISHFUL THINKING mate!
As anthropologists and biochemists continue their quest for more answers, we, the public in the mean time can do no better than wait, watch and of course continue to be (and fall) in LOVE.
