Dirty Sex

The article titled 'Dirty Sex' in 'Down to Earth' magazine dealt with everything except for what you must be thinking right this moment (trust me, I thought that too).

It dealt with the ever decreasing sex ratio in India and the fact that the females are in fact looked upon as the "dirty sex." From 972 in 1901, our sex ratio presently is 933, that is, we have 933 females for every 1000 males. The most developed state in India - Punjab - is infamous for its dismal sex ratio - 790. It's (Punjab and Haryana's combined actually) capital Chandigarh is heralded as the abortion capital of India.

A moving piece showcasing real life silent sufferers, the article brought out the most vicious 'vicious circle' ever. Violence against women, be it a foetus with XX chromosome, girl or woman, is attributed to the unfavourable sex ratio to begin with. This shortage of women, in turn, leads to greater control over them and increasing violence against them!

We might be crawling towards our goal of becoming a developed country by 2020 but the stereotypical attitude of our educated and uneducated brethren alike, has not changed. I swear, everytime I say that I have an elder sister when asked about my siblings is without a doubt, followed by the question, "Just two sisters??" or "No brother!!!!!" Geez, people if I had a brother, won't I SAY it!
