Happy World Book Day
To celebrate the joy of reading, UNESCO declared April 23 to be celebrated as the World Book and Copyright Day. This day in 1616, three great writers Miguel de Cervantes, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcialasco de la Vega passed away. The day also happens to be the date of birth and death of some other prominent authors as well namely, maurice Druon, Halldor K. Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla and manuel Mejia Vallejo.
Let's see how many I've read.. all but two: William Shakespeare and Nabokov (Lolita of course).
On this day UNESCO is said to encourage people the world over to appreciate the power of the written world and also remember those who have made exceptional contributions to literature.
The need to talk about copyright issues when we talk of books simply cannot be overemphasized. A mere stoppage at a traffic light provides one with ample proof. It is only when you and I say no to pirated books (and video) that this scourge can be removed.
Used to say earlier that if stranded on a remote island, I'd like to have a book as my lawful companion but that has changed now. Being the only student trainee at HMT Machine Tools Division at Bangalore, at first enjoyed the fact that I would not utter a word from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm and just read and observe. But after a point of time, I vividly remember that I would yearn for a human being to just talk!
I have not looked back since then and now I would be glad to stay on a remote island provided I am accompanied by a person (preferably Johnny Depp or the likes of him:))
Setting aside my desperation for the time being,
ENJOY THE DAY TOMORROW PEOPLE.
Sadly nothing is happening in the Centre today on World Earth Day.
