You Decide
Just when I was having "people trouble", it feels like God spoke to me through a friend to make me pay heed to the bigger picture in life and get over it (A and V).
Hi my dear IAS officer friend
This is for u and all the best...
Recently I went through an article on decision-making and would like to share it with you.
It goes like this:
There were two railway tracks, one of which was not in operation. A few kids, went to play by the tracks. Now those kids, as all other kids, were quite careless and so only one of them played on the tract that was not in use and all the others played on the track, which was in operation.
Fortunately or unfortunately, you happened to be at the track interchange and saw the train approaching. What would you do? Would you let the train go by and let majority of the kids be killed or would you divert the track and kill the lone kid playing by the non-operational track to save the majority of the kids?
Most people would choose to divert the track and kill the lone kid, as that would seem as a rational decision. The 1:20 ratio would go in favor of the majority.
But have you ever thought that the single child had made the correct decision and nevertheless he had to be sacrificed for his careless and thoughtless friends.
This kind of dilemma happens in our lives occasionally, especially in a democratic society where the minority is always sacrificed no matter how farsighted and knowledgeable they are and how foolish and ignorant the majority may be.
The child, who chose to play by the non-operational track, was sidelined and if he would be sacrificed, no one would care about him.
To make the right decision is not to change the track since the kids playing on the operational track should have known that the train would come and they would have to run away if they heard the train’s sirens.
However, the track was not in use most probably because it was not safe. Therefore if the train would have been diverted, it would meet with an accident and hundreds of lives would be on stake for a few kids.
Though life is full of tough decisions, we must not take hasty decisions and always listen to our heart, which guides in the right direction.
We must not be afraid to make mistakes and thus stay back.
Everybody makes a mistake that is why they put an eraser on top of a pencil.
