Two in One

Had been wanting to write about that four letter word that supposedly makes the world go round and really wanted to see the 2006 Oscar-winning documentary on penguins. Never thought multi-tasking was ever possible but lo and behold, just my luck to finally see the heart-warming movie -- 'Penguins - A Love Story'.

Each year the Emperor penguins (the largest of the penguins on earth) make the arduous pilgrimage to meet their 'juliets' early March. Not all make it as some are just too busy eating that they don't even begin the journey and thus, are left alone where they die alone too!

They get lost at times.. however, they accept it and stop. Finally, after braving the rough weathers, they reach the hallow point where they were born years ago and this is where they will find their lovers.

Settling down with THE ONE doesn't take too long when you have endured so much and KNOW that 'SHE'S THE ONE'. In spite of females outnumbering the elusive males, the latter's fidelity is never questioned as the not-so-successful females are scurried out.

The couple enjoys a brief courtship period which results in a new life. It is beautiful but the inevitable separation is now staring at them as the mothers now have to go to the ocean to feed themselves having lost a lot of body weight after giving birth to their little one. Fathers now come to the fore by carefully receiving the egg. Some impatient ones, however, lose it and the couple never see each other's faces ever again.

Weather plays the villain in this love story. As the mother begins a perilious journey of around 120 kms for her survival along with her baby's and ultimately of the father's, the latter is subjected to one of the toughest tests of endurance and patience. He has to stand in an uncomfortable position for nearly two months with temperatures dropping to -80 deg F and winds blowing at 100 km/hr. This is where group dynamics come to his rescue as all the males form a huddle with each one taking turns in facing the brutal winds.

If the mother doesn't return, the father would have to sacrifice the little one for his own survival. While waiting, the father lovingly feeds the baby with some hidden food (read white stuff) in its mouth. By this time, the lucky couples are re-united as the approaching mother lets out a distinct clarion call.

Change of guard once again as it's now the fathers' turn to leave as they too have lost half of their body weight by now. And so, the young ones are re-united with their mothers but only for a short while as each parent takes turn to go to fetch food for the growing offspring. In betwen the marches, the family will be together. They will savour the moment. Play around a bit and then go back to their respective duties.

Come November (detour - Sweet November - AWESOME must-watch MOVIE) and the parents go back to their respective 'separate lives' with the fruit of their love now capable of being on its own. They will never see their reward again!

Wonder if we can a draw a parallel between their saga and what we might have in our lifetimes.

Maybe one can read the above text again through a shaded lens with a human touch!
